Elon Musk-ovites, Christo-Fascism & the Specter of End Times
A modern-day blitzkrieg is ravaging our democracy in the name of totalitarianism.
“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.”
In his iconic poem The Second Coming, composed in 1919, Irish poet William Butler Yeats captured the terror and foreboding of his times, reflecting an ominous shift toward a cataclysmic future for post-WWI Europe and the tendency of history to repeat.
Little more than a decade later, Adolf Hitler rose to power.
AND HERE WE ARE AGAIN.
Thus spoke French Senator Claude Malhuret before the French Senate last week, echoing Yeat’s warning that, once again, things are falling apart.
“Never in history has a president of the United States surrendered to the enemy. Never has one supported an aggressor against an ally, issued so many illegal decrees, and sacked so many military leaders in one go. Never has one trampled on the American Constitution while threatening to disregard judges who stand in his way, weaken countervailing powers, and take control of social media.
This is not a drift to illiberalism; this is the beginning of the seizure of democracy. Let us remember that it only took one month, three weeks, and two days to bring down the Weimar Republic and its constitution.” Senator Claude Malhuret (Watch the full speech here)
Malhuret is reminding us of Adolf Hitler’s lightning-speed destruction of Germany’s democratic government in 1933 and the rise of the brutal Third Reich.
Hitler’s support came, in large part, from German oligarchs and radical rightwing Christians, echoing the Christian Nationalist movement that has now swept the United States, hellbent upon destroying our democracy. (How Hitler dismantled democracy in 53 days)
It’s a threat I wrote about just over one year ago in a post titled American Taliban? The existential threat of Christian Nationalism.
In his blog post titled, The Bootlicker Brigade for the Morbidly Rich & Their Never-Ending War on Democracy, author Thom Hartmann puts it this way:
They show up at school board and city council meetings sometimes literally wrapped in the American flag while carrying semiautomatic weapons in one hand and bibles in the other, screaming obscenities and threats at public officials.
They demand that children be exposed to measles in school and refuse to vaccinate their kids, then support Republicans who are planning to destroy the Medicaid program that provides healthcare to more than 70 million Americans.
They say they love our country, but they and the world’s richest man are actively gutting our government in a way that is openly delighting Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.
They strip out of our schools’ curriculum the history of Black people being beaten at the Edmund Pettis Bridge 60 years ago today, are banning books nationwide, and are waging war against queer people for simply wanting to be who they are.
They say they love our military, but are firing thousands of workers in the Veterans Administration.
They claim to be champions for the elderly, but are actively working on a plan to privatize Social Security while they gut the Social Security administration itself.
They insist that global warming is a hoax and fight like hell to keep hundreds of billions in taxpayer subsidies flowing to the fossil fuel oligarchs, threatening violence at even a discussion of a carbon tax, electric cars, or LED light bulbs.
They celebrate an attack on our US Capitol as well as several state capitols, trying to kill Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Vice President Mike Pence, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
As Elon Musk and DOGE continue to dismantle our government, the GOP Senate and House members are not only capitulating but wholeheartedly applauding and embracing this attack upon our Constitution, our democracy, the press, our allies, and the American promise of liberty and justice for all.
Who among us will rise up now?
Postscript: In the thirteenth century, Dante Alighieri wrote, “The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.”
