Got Crypto?
Fraud, Scams, Pump and Dump, Human Trafficking, Organized Crime, Oligarchs, and POTUS.
"I promised to Make America Great Again, this time with crypto!"
Trump wrote this on Twitter (X), Sept 20, 2024, during the final months of the presidential campaign.
The Trump family crypto business, World Liberty Financial, includes Donald Trump as the "chief crypto advocate," with Barron Trump as the "DeFi visionary," and Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. serving as "Web3 ambassadors."
This week, the president is in the Middle East, meeting with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud (BTS), and attending a state dinner with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who has gifted Trump a 400 million dollar luxuryliner to be used as Airforce One.
Mohammed bin Salman approved the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a vocal critic of the Saudi government's crackdown on dissent, human rights abuses, and the lack of political freedoms. In 2018, Khashoggi was ambushed and strangled by a 15-member squad of Saudi operatives at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. His body was dismembered with a hacksaw.
The Trump family has established extensive business ties in the Middle East, including involvement in cryptocurrency through their firm, World Liberty Financial, which has received at least $2 billion in investments from the region.
The Dark Side of Crypto
Cryptocurrency is often used by organized crime and oligarchs to facilitate money laundering, evade sanctions, and conduct illicit transactions due to its relative anonymity and the ability to move large sums of money across borders quickly.
It’s also a world rife with scams and schemes to mislead and defraud investors.
“Fraud, scams, ‘pump and dump’ (a fraudulent practice of encouraging new investors to buy crypto assets to artificially inflate the price, selling the shares at their peak and leaving new investors ‘holding the bag’ when the price collapses), 69 Ponzi schemes, 70 embezzlement, ransomware attacks and phishing, to name a few, seem nearly ubiquitous in the cryptoworld. In just some examples, perpetrators of Ponzi schemes convince victims to buy non-existent crypto funds or crypto-backed securities.” John Collins, Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime
Trump Meme Coin
The Trump meme coin, known as $TRUMP, is a cryptocurrency launched shortly before his second inauguration in January 2025. Meme coins have no underlying value, fundamental utility, or practical applications beyond trading and speculation.
This year alone, the Trump meme coin price has soared and crashed by billions of dollars, resulting in massive profits and staggering losses.
Meanwhile, the president has expressed intentions to make the U.S. a leader in cryptocurrency, including plans for a "Crypto Strategic Reserve" and advocating for the use of digital assets as part of the national financial strategy.
