They fought to protect our freedoms. Many were wounded in action. Many gave their lives. Now, they are being fired, marginalized, and even erased.
2,000+ fired from the Pentagon.
2,000 fired from the Department of Defense.
676 fired from the Department of Treasury.
500 fired from the Department of Energy.
450 fired from the Department of Agriculture.
20,000+ face firing from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
And more to come.
Our veterans are now casualties on the political battlefield here at home. It is unprecedented in the history of our nation.
“Until Elon Musk and Donald Trump came on the scene, America never turned its back on our veterans and their families. Their reckless plan to wipe out the VA’s ability to deliver on America’s promise to veterans will backfire on millions of veterans and their families who risked their lives in service for our country.” AFGE National President Everett Kelley
This past weekend, thousands of veterans protested at the Capitol Mall and at state capitols across the nation.
The group said the date of the rally — March 14th — was symbolic as it represents Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, “which states that a person ‘engaged in insurrection or rebellion’ after taking an oath of office to support the Constitution should be barred from holding office again,” according to the group’s posts on social media. 83-year-old veteran John Pottridge, a close friend of mine, was an Army Captain in the Vietnam War. He led a combat company and was wounded in action, leaving him permanently disabled. He is now in the late stages of cancer resulting from exposure to Agent Orange on the battlefield.
Not only are veterans being fired, they are being marginalized and even erased.
“Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place of presidents, generals, Medal of Honor recipients and more than 400,000 service members and their families, has purged its website of material focused on Black, Hispanic, and female troops buried there…” Stars and Stripes
“A webpage detailing the history of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team has been removed from the U.S. Army’s official website. The 442nd, combined with the 100th Infantry Battalion, remains the most decorated combat unit in history for its size and length of service. The World War II unit was made up mostly of second generation Japanese-Americans.” Hawaii News Now (After a major public outcry, the deletion was restored).
The U.S. military has 1.3 million active-duty members. There are 18 million living veterans. They all share a sacred Oath of Service to protect our Constitution against all enemies, foreign or domestic.

Postscript: In the Fall of 2023, my son Morgan and I volunteered for Honor Flight San Diego, a non-profit that flies our military veterans to Washington, DC, to tour historic monuments and memorials.
We produced several videos during the three-day trip, but the most moving for us by far was when we returned to San Diego International Airport, where thousands of people turned out to greet the veterans and say, “Welcome home, thank you for your service!”
