Let Your Voice Be Heard!
Standing up for our nation of the people, by the people, and for the people.
Is it acceptable for a minority of citizens to claim they have been anointed by God and therefore are justified in using extreme violence to achieve their ends?
Are we a nation to be governed by a theocracy of hard-right Christian Nationalists, or are we a pluralistic, democratic society with equal rights for all?
Do we want our Constitution to be preserved, or are we willing to live under the rule of an “American Taliban?”
I recently spoke with constitutional and civil rights attorney Andrew Seidel, who notes that Christian Nationalism, which was a major force behind the attack on our U.S. Capitol, not only poses a grave threat to our democracy and the rule of law, but its adherents also threaten the character of communities across the nation... and this includes Coronado.
Andrew is a powerful voice in the new documentary, God & Country, which explores how Christianity is being hijacked by Christian Nationalism. On the national level, as he notes, it’s an existential threat to our democracy. On the local level, its adherents are determined to take over city councils, school boards, and library boards, restrict access to books, suppress the accurate teaching of our history, and ultimately dismantle public education.
The Threat to Coronado
Are you comfortable with the fact that Awaken Church of San Diego, which promotes Christian Nationalism, has vowed to come to Coronado, impose its will upon our community, and drive any opponents out of town?
How do you feel about Awaken’s founder threatening to “take the crown” from our Crown City while calling us unclean, unholy, demonic, and perverted?
Do you believe they have a right to decide what constitutes God’s will… the rule of law and democracy be damned?
Here’s My Take
The threat of Christian Nationalism is very real on the national and local levels. If we raise our voices, commit to action, and stay vigilant, we can save our democracy. We can preserve the character of our local communities. We can ensure that there is liberty and justice for all, not just for a self-anointed few.
To do so, we need to raise our voices on high. Let your city council members, your state, and your national representatives know your concerns. Support groups like those in the resources section below who are working diligently to preserve our republic.
Let’s remember the words of the late Aleksei Navalny, who was a true hero and valiant fighter:
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.”
