Massacre of the American Dream
A billionaire immigrant on ketamine leading a coup against the New Deal as new Trump tariffs trigger a stock market plunge and roil financial markets worldwide.
Genesis of the Dream
It was the worst of times. America was reeling from the Great Depression. Investors jumped from buildings, workers lost their jobs, farmers lost their land.
“Hooverville” shantytowns dotted America’s cities, women stitched clothing from cotton flour sacks, children were sent out to beg for stale food. Breadlines formed across the nation, people flocked to soup kitchens, many faced homelessness and starvation.
Then came the New Deal, launched in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his first 100 days in office.
FDR focused on the "3 R's": Relief, Recovery, and Reforms. Relief for the unemployed and poor. Recovery to bring our economy back to normal levels. Reforms of our financial system to prevent a repeat depression.
Social Security provided a safety net for our elderly and disabled Americans.
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) employed millions to construct roads, bridges, and buildings.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was designed to protect depositors in case of bank failures.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) oversaw stock exchanges and protected investors by enforcing securities laws.
The G.I. Bill offered veterans education benefits, unemployment compensation, and low-interest loans for homes and businesses.
The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) protected workers’ rights to organize into unions and address unfair labor practices.
The Rural Electrification Administration (REA) helped to bring electricity to farms and remote communities.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) provided jobs for conserving and developing natural resources in rural lands.
The Fair Labor Standards Act created a 40-hour workweek and ended child labor.
Most American business tycoons strenuously opposed the New Deal, favoring a cheap, powerless workforce and minimal regulations. Henry Ford, a supporter of Adolf Hitler, was among the most vocal, disdaining virtually everything FDR put forth.
The deal was far from perfect: African Americans were often discriminated against to gain support from southern states who wanted to ensure that benefits primarily went to white citizens.
But thanks to the New Deal, America got back on its feet and set the stage for the dawning of the American Dream.
In the 1960s, Lyndon B. Johnson's “Great Society” expanded the principles of the New Deal with domestic programs aimed at eliminating poverty and racial injustice, funding more public education, strengthening consumer protection, supporting urban renewal, passing environmental initiatives, and establishing Medicare and Medicaid.
Along the way, we became an economic powerhouse, our middle class boomed, and the American Dream became a reality for millions of families.
That dream is now being cut to pieces before our eyes.
An unelected immigrant and his minions are now dismantling the New Deal and Great Society with mass firings, closures, and the defunding of critical departments and agencies that serve our seniors, veterans, workers, and school children.
On its October 2024 magazine cover, The Economist proclaimed the U.S. economy “The Envy of the World.” This is what the Trump administration inherited.
As I write this, President Trump has just announced a slew of widespread tariffs against our neighbors and allies (Putin’s Russia was excluded). Trump claims he inherited a ruined economy and that his tariffs will create “the golden age of America.” In response, the stock market plunged, and there is concern over a global economic recession.
On Saturday, April 5, Americans across the nation will join the “Hands Off!” A national day of action to stand strong for democracy.
“This is a nationwide mobilization to stop the most brazen power grab in modern history. Trump, Musk, and their billionaire cronies are orchestrating an all-out assault on our government, our economy, and our basic rights—enabled by Congress every step of the way.
They want to strip America for parts—shuttering Social Security offices, firing essential workers, eliminating consumer protections, and gutting Medicaid—all to bankroll their billionaire tax scam. They’re handing over our tax dollars, our public services, and our democracy to the ultra-rich.
If we don’t fight now, there won’t be anything left to save.” Hands Off!

This, of course, is what it's all about: kill the New Deal, restore white male supremacy, ignore the rule of law. Well done, Brad!
